Introducing, THE AFRIKANER by Arianna Dagnino

Author: Christina - Published 2021-01-23 16:46 - (678 Reads)

Guernica Editions, Toronto, 2019

Set in the turmoil of newly-post apartheid South Africa, Arianna Dagnino’s novel, The Afrikaner, (Guernica Editions) is the story of Zoe Du Plessis (33), a woman scientist of Afrikaner descent. A personal tragedy leads Zoe to face her family’s dark secret while she is struggling with the self-reproach for her country’s shameful past. A scientific expedition into the hot plains of the Kalahari Desert sets Zoe on a path of atonement and self-discovery that will allow her to reclaim her identity and meet some memorable characters along the way – among them, a troubled writer, a Bushman shaman and a Border War veteran.

The book is inspired by the five years (1996-2000) the author spent in South Africa working as an international reporter for the Italian press and is currently adapted to screen by the author in collaboration with Dr. Ernst Mathijs, Head of the Centre for Cinema and Film Studies at the University of British Columbia.

Every once in a while, one comes across a story that becomes of great importance to the self and the collective. Every once in a while, one discovers an actor that has the innate ability to manifest that story. I found that story, its writer and the actor all in one package. A privilege, indeed. Collaboration is a meeting of hearts and minds. The partnership of script, actor and director is here in “A Perfect Picture” that tells the tragic story of a South African war photographer Kevin Carter, who in 1994, won the Pulitzer Prize for an iconic photo of the famine in Sudan. UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day, 23 April 2016

Author: Christina - Published 2016-04-08 15:14 - (2485 Reads)

"Literacy is the door to knowledge, essential to individual self-esteem and empowerment. Books, in all forms, play an essential role here." Irina Bokova, Director General, UNESCO

23 April is a symbolic date for world literature. It is on this date that the birth and deaths occurred of prominent authors. (Shakespeare, Cervantes, et al.) It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those, who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.

In this regard, UNESCO created World Book and Copyright Day.

The Advisory Board and Friends of the Library representatives will be giving out roses on that day.
